POETRY BY AVIS POPE
Thelma Pope = My Queen of The Universe
My mother, My Queen of The Universe,
stands on high.
Giving life to eight children
yet refused to sigh.
Love and respect she instilled
in me so dearly.
I try to bestow more than saying,
"happy Mother’s Day" yearly.
My mother is as beautiful
as a falling star out of reach,
descending towards
Dauphin Island’s sandy beach.
Her life she placed on hold
since teaching me was a priority.
From ABCs and 123s
graduation came even as a minority.
953 Basil Street was where
she created many memories with ease.
Love and laughter was dessert
with home-cooked meals she served to please.
Pleasant thoughts of seeing Mardi Gras floats go by
as she held my hand.
I remember the beads and candy raining down
that seemed so grand.
Mom overcame many struggles
and most times hid them well.
On positive thoughts she focused
and negative thoughts she did not dwell.
Calm under pressure was how
she handled trials and tribulation.
Prayer was her connection,
and on God she relied without hesitation.
There are times when I can see her reflection
in my siblings and me.
Loving, positive, and being long-suffering
are all wonderful things to be.
