Originally, it was a conversation with Agnes that inspired me to create this annual Gospel Concert in celebration of Black History Month. We were talking one day about the importance of hosting the Temecula Valley International Jazz Festival each July, and how Jazz music is one of the few truly American Art forms, when Agnes pointed out how Jazz has its roots deeply embedded in American Gospel. This year, we are again also honored to participate in the continued effort of raising funds for the Agnes Diggs - "Road To College" Scholarship Fund, and to that end people may make donations at this years event." The GMWA was organized by the late Rev. James Cleveland in 1968. It is composed of singers, ministers, musicians and music-lovers, from all over the world. There are individual chapters of GMWA in every major city in the United States, and now has chapters in Bermuda, The Bahamas, France, England, Denmark, and Australia. The Los Angeles Chapter was formed by Rev. Cleveland with Harrison Johnson as the Chapter Representative. Rodena Preston (sister of music legend Billy Preston) was appointed to this position in August 1972. The chapter now has a membership of 500+ members who travel each year to the national meetings that are held in various cities. On the local level, the Los Angeles Chapter meets on the first Tuesday of each month. They perform at various churches and gospel events throughout the year. The choir travels to various cities to perform and the traveling component varies in size. In the past years, Musicians Workshop has hosted the concert with Preston and 75 members of the GMWA at the Hope Lutheran church in Temecula in Celebration of Black History Month. As a result, several Temecula residents are now members themselves of the GMWA and have hopes of opening a Temecula Chapter in the near future.
